Dental professionals across the UK, including the British Dental Association (BDA), are concerned about the European Parliament’s decision to ban dental amalgam starting January 1, 2025.

THE BDA warns about the significant impact this will have on NHS dentistry, which has already been struggling. Northern Ireland, in particular, is known to have the highest rate of oral health inequality in the UK.

Amalgam is the most commonly used material by the NHS for fillings and the BDA has recently stressed that “there are currently no alternative restorative materials that compete with amalgam on speed of placement or longevity.”

The European Commission revised the Mercury Regulation back in July of 2023, to protect citizens and the environment from mercury toxicity.
