UB Dental’s Sebastiano Andreana Receives 2016 Isaih Lew Award

Sebastiano Andreana, DDS, associate professor and director of implant dentistry in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, received the Isaih Lew Memorial Research Award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).

The annual award, presented to Andreana at the AAID’s 65th Annual Education Conference, recognizes a single individual for their significant contributions to research in implant dentistry.

In honor of Lew, a pioneer in implant dentistry research, the award is given to those who perpetuate the late researcher’s spirit and enthusiasm for the field.

“I could not believe that I was the recipient of this very prestigious award from the academy,” says Andreana.

“When I looked at the list of previous recipients, I fell off the chair. It is an incredible list of major players in the world of implant dentistry. And now my name, along with UB’s, is there as well.”

Andreana has published more than 200 journal articles and research abstracts in the areas of implant dentistry, bone regeneration, laser applications in dentistry and dental restorative materials.

His research has identified the effects of several antibiotics and antidepressants on implant failure. He also helped develop an award-winning, unique biomaterial that can be used in bone regeneration.

He has received nearly 30 grants to support his work from agencies that include the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense and numerous international corporations.

Andreana holds a doctorate of dental surgery from the Sapienza University of Rome and a master’s degree in oral science from the UB School of Dental Medicine.
