Ottawa says there is a shortage of dentists in rural Canada so it has chipped in $800,000 to get foreign-trained dentists here ASAP, according to a story by Tom Godfrey in the Toronto Sun.
“The Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation will use the money for a national centre to assess the credentials of foreign dentists and determine if they can come to Canada to work.” the story reports. “If the credentials are accepted, there is then a written test after which the dentists can register to work in any province.”
It will take one year, down from the current seven, to assess the credentials of a foreign-trained dentist. So far, 1,200 foreign dentists have applied to practice here.
