In an era characterized by rapid advancements, one constant remains: the prevalence of oral diseases has reached epidemic levels. According to the World Health Organization’s 2022 Global Oral Health Status Report, untreated oral diseases affect over half of the global population, with the number of cases increasing by one billion over the past three decades. The report urges immediate actions to enhance access to oral healthcare, expand the workforce of licensed oral care providers, and prioritize preventive measures.1

Furthermore, the integration of emerging technologies such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and augmented reality is revolutionizing the dental industry. Advanced software now interprets radiographs, oral and salivary diagnostics are performed in new ways and at the point of care, and there is an increasing awareness among patients of the integral connection between oral health and systemic health.

This transformative period in dentistry is poised to make a significant impact. A new generation of thought leaders, social media influencers, and executives is emerging, supported by the wisdom and mentorship of preceding generations. Continuing education initiatives are shifting the focus from treating oral diseases to emphasizing prevention. Dental conferences are being reimagined to shape the future of the industry, while legislation, advocacy, and policy work are modernizing the dental workforce.

November’s Oral Hygiene issue marks the final issue of the year and celebrates dental hygienists who are redefining the stage of dentistry, including those who are pioneering their own stages. Balbir Sohi is elevating mobile dentistry to new heights, even gaining national recognition on CBC’s Dragon’s Den. The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association is maintaining a prominent role by appointing Alexandra Sheppard as their new president. This issue highlights leading hygienists through our monthly Hygiene Spotlight interviews. Additionally, Donna Wells, RDH, BA, contributes an insightful article on fostering positive and respectful workplace environments for dental hygienists.

As this year comes to close and a new one begins, the stage is set for a transformative era in dentistry. We stand at a pivotal crossroads, with the potential to significantly alter the trajectory of oral health on a global scale. By embracing innovation and fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, the field of dentistry is poised to reduce the staggering prevalence of oral diseases. The combined efforts of forward-thinking hygienists, policy advocates, and educators underline the importance of a preventive approach, which not only addresses current challenges but also anticipates future needs. As we turn the page to a new chapter, it is clear that the momentum generated by these trailblazers will continue to drive progress and inspire a healthier, more informed society.
