THE WHY: Clinicians’ story
While the world was experiencing a global shutdown, many practicing dentists utilized the luxury of time to explore their entrepreneurial opportunities in dentistry. Due to the many well-understood influences of the pandemic on working associates, the idea of opening a new practice and naming it Confluence Dental came to light. Dr. Mackenzie Naylor with her loving husband and their two dogs found themselves spending a lot more time together, which afforded them the space to seize their opportunities and set their plans into motion. Confluence Dental is located in Inglewood, Calgary, which is situated in the middle of two beautiful rivers (Confluence stands for the junction of two rivers). The community is located just outside of downtown Calgary and is home to shops selling vintage furniture, indie fashion and rare vinyl with an eclectic dining scene.
THE HOW: Planning & preparation
Before taking action, Dr. Naylor decided to conduct extensive research of the community. She knew this was an important first step that would aid in the planning and preparation phase prior to choosing the exact physical space. She really liked the fact that it would be close to home and enjoyed the prospect of walking to work while contributing to her new community as a local business owner. Through her research she also discovered that there was a small ratio of dentist-to-patients with an exciting opportunity to serve more people in need of dental healthcare. This revelation ultimately helped her to make their final decision on a location. After choosing a space she quickly began putting together her design and building a team of experts which included a designer, builder and equipment supplier. She was deeply appreciative of the designers’ support and contribution towards planning and turning an ideal space she can now proudly call her new professional dental home into a reality.
THE RESULTS: Technical design features
The vibe of the community was a significant consideration when planning the style and technical features of the new practice. The design elements chosen are heavily influenced to match the overall vibe of the community. They utilized beautiful, locally sourced wood for the reception desk, along with strategically blended brick features in the reception area – designed to match the look of the outside of the historic building. The operatory dental chairs were artistically crafted into works of art using warm, stylish coloring techniques to create the impression of a traditional leather-boot-like appeal. The mix of contemporary and traditional elements are what make Confluence Dental a modern, yet warm and welcoming, atmosphere.
THE IMPACT: Empowered practice outcomes
The community of Inglewood has excitedly praised and welcomed the office into their community. The busy street on which they are located allows team members to walk outside and immediately step into a local high-end restaurant, or grab a quick cup of coffee in one of the local cafés. Dr. Naylor purposefully created a smaller staff room in order to encourage the team to buy local and represent the practice by mingling in the community during breaks in the workday or at lunch time. Confluence Dental has created a great space for the locals to enjoy having their dental health needs served. They are excited to provide the local community with greater access to dental care and are looking forward to reaching and serving more and more patients over the years as the community grows.
