THE WHY: Owner’s story
Essex Family Dental opened its doors in 2016. Essex is a growing community located in the heart of Windsor, Ont., a city situated on the south bank of the Detroit River directly across from Detroit, Michigan. The city prides itself on safety, accessibility, affordability and fun, and is a leader in manufacturing and the automotive industry. The community has something for everyone and is a vibrant destination that celebrates a broad cultural diversity. Dr. Aziz Moukled and Andrew Moukled are siblings as well as the strategic business partners behind this special practice. They grew up in the area and felt a strong, nostalgic desire to create a unique place for serving great dental healthcare to their community. The well-run practice has enjoyed a rapid growth and retention of patients, so when the unit next door became available, they seized the opportunity to design and expand their facility from three operatories to the now beautiful seven-operatory facility they proudly practice out of today.
THE HOW: Planning & preparation
The journey began when Andrew came across a public school that was being converted into a medical facility and looking for tenants. The location is surrounded by various amenities and facilities, such as grocery stores, big box retailers and a local sports arena, all creating a strong flow of people into the area. They quickly seized the opportunity, giving them early tenant choice to be optimally situated within the building. They secured a unit front and center with great street exposure. Interestingly, their practice is situated in the area of the previous school’s main entrance and front office of the Principal. The expansion took 4 months to plan, and 6 months of actual construction. It could have taken less time if they were fully shut down. In this case, the entire team skillfully coordinated with the contractor in order to remain open and continue to serve high-quality patient care while the expansion was concurrently underway.
THE RESULTS: Technical design features
Feeling inspired by the practice’s initial growth and success, they were much more confident about investing in a well-designed expansion phase. Dr. Aziz wanted to create a wonderful high-tech, high-quality, luxurious facility for all to enjoy. Upon entering, guests experience a stylish and modern reception area, designed with a curved, floating-like desk and inviting, family-friendly bench seating. Deep traditional grey tones and welcoming blue colours spice up the overall atmosphere with a vibe that can be universally enjoyed by the diverse community. They are excited to be able to provide a broad array of family dentistry and advanced dental services out of beautiful, fully equipped dual entry operatories. The closed operatories have TVs built into the ceilings with beautiful ceramic tiled walls, and a bright feeling of spaciousness due to the large windows facing the street.
THE IMPACT: Empowered practice outcomes
The grand opening of their newly expanded space was a very special moment that was proudly celebrated by the entire team and local community. It was a well coordinated project that required organization, team work and skillful collaboration. The practice also enjoys serving its community through various philanthropic outreach initiatives such as fundraising with charities to donate custom mouth guards to local sports teams. They have created a beautiful space for growing deep, meaningful, high-quality healthcare experiences.
