The why: Background story
In 2013, just one year after completing his studies at the University of Colorado, Dr. David Walt founded Walt Orthodontics in Vaughan, Ontario. His personal journey to orthodontics began unexpectedly during dental school when he required a significant jaw surgery. This experience sparked an interest in learning to provide patients with proactive, life-changing orthodontic care. The impact of the overall experience shaped his approach to clinical practice and inspired a drive for embracing leading innovations in orthodontics. Driven by this passion, Dr. Walt quickly set his practice apart by becoming an enthusiastic early adopter of clear aligner technology. His office also provided a well-rounded mix of conventional orthodontic treatment. After ten exciting years of growth, they began to need more room necessitating a move to a new, much larger location in 2022. The new facility stands as a testament to a vision and the dedication that began with one young orthodontist’s inspiration to make a difference.
The how: Planning & preparation
As the team began to outgrow their 1900 sq/ft office, they explored the option of expanding into neighboring units. Fortunately, their realtor found a better option enabling them to relocate into a newly built two-story building just minutes away. The new space occupied two-thirds of the second floor with an accounting firm across the hall and a high traffic Montessori School occupying the entire ground floor beneath them. Moving from their original ground floor unit was initially worrisome, but reduced rent per sq/ft coupled with the school traffic below was an equalizing trade-off. The 5500 sq/ft space is a significant upgrade. Instead of going with the traditional open bay orthodontic layout of their previous office, this facility was designed with more privacy and patient experience in mind. It features eight enclosed operatory suites, providing a comfortable, private setting for treating patients of all ages.
The results: Technical design features
When stepping into the new practice, patients immediately feel they are in a special place. The overall futuristic interior design, plus a flowing black and white color palette with pops of radiant blue, stand out from the traditional clinical setting. Everyone says the office feels more like a modern studio-lounge. The layout is thoughtfully designed for comfort and efficiency. With five consultation rooms, patients can enjoy flexible appointment options and minimal wait times. A designated separate entry and exit, check-in and check-out area streamlines patient flow, while the large state-of-the-art lab ensures the team has ample space for production and storage. Meanwhile, a large staff retreat area allows the team to eat, connect and collaborate during down time. The modern facility is outfitted with the latest orthodontic technology, including Invisalign and custom LightForce braces, allowing the team to provide comfortable cosmetic and advanced treatment to achieve the patient’s ideal smile.
The impact: Empowered practice outcomes
As Walt Orthodontics grows, their commitment to community and innovation only deepens. Regular visits to local schools enable Dr. Walt and his team to build strong connections while educating young students on dental health and promoting wellness in the community. Dr. Walt’s impact also extends far beyond his practice. He is a faculty member, key opinion leader, and advisory board member for Align Technology.
