A new clinical study found a hydroxyapatite toothpaste works just as well as fluoride toothpaste to protect against cavities. The research was conducted by a team of international scientists and Polish clinicians to find an alternative to toothpaste containing fluoride.

“Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral found in the skeleton,” reports Frontiers in Public Health. “It’s known to be very safe for human consumption and has previously been shown to help with oral conditions like periodontitis.”

An 18-month-long clinical trial took place with 171 adult patients, with half of the recruits using hydroxyapatite toothpaste and the control group using fluoridated toothpaste. The results showed 90% of patients in both groups had no new cavities, with no difference in effectiveness between hydroxyapatite toothpaste and fluoride toothpaste.
