Igniting Passion: The Heart of Orthodontics in Dentistry

by Bruno Vendittelli, DDS, D.ORTHO, FRCD(C)

Passion is defined as an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. On a recent trip to Naples, Italy, I visited the sartoria of master tailor Orazio Luciano. What impressed me was his continued excitement for his craft at the age of 80. He took pride in showing me the details of his jackets: hand-sewn buttonholes (320 throws to be exact), the “spalla camicia” shoulder fabricated without padding and the slight curve to the breast pocket – known as a “barchetta.” He handled the jacket with great passion. The experience vividly reminded me of the profound connection between passion and orthodontics. Just like master tailor Orazio Luciano, we orthodontists infuse our work with a similar emotion and dedication.

Passion is a powerful force that inspires creativity, innovation, and excellence. In orthodontics, this propels us to view our work as more than mere tooth alignment. We recognize the transformative impact our treatments have on patients’ lives, instilling confidence and improving their overall health and well-being.

Much like master tailor Orazio who meticulously crafts a jacket, orthodontists understand that beauty extends beyond cultural boundaries, resonating on an emotional level. Witnessing the remarkable impact of a well-aligned smile on self-esteem and social interactions fills our hearts with immense joy. It is through our pursuit of perfection that we can create smiles that radiate with beauty and authenticity.

Our passion fuels a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to embracing advancements in orthodontics. Through research, attending conferences, and collaborating with colleagues, we push the boundaries of what is possible. This passion compels us to explore new treatment modalities and technologies to deliver the highest standard of care whilst keeping our patient’s health and well-being at the center of this focus.

Our passion establishes a profound bond with our patients. Like the tailor who understands their clients’ aspirations, we become companions and guides on their transformative journey. This trust and connection drive us to go above and beyond, leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of excellence and ensuring that every patient receives personalized care tailored to their needs.

Inspired by the passion I witnessed in Orzaio’s sartoria, let us celebrate this feeling as we create brighter, healthier smiles and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve.
