Office Space: Fielding Dental Healthcare

by Darcie Galbraith, BA, Interior Design Coach; Peter Barry, C.M.C. Practice Success Coach

The why: Background story

Since 1980, this family-owned practice has been a corner stone of the Burlington, Ontario, community. Founded by Dr. David Fielding and his wife, Linda Fielding, the practice has grown over the decades, supported by Linda’s expertise in business consulting and interior design, and their three children: Dr. Ben Fielding, a dedicated dentist; Jocelyn Fielding, a skilled hygienist; and Carly Fielding, an accomplished director of business operations. Together the close-knit family-partners bring a unique blend of clinical expertise, patient care, and innovative business acumen. Over the past 40 years, the practice has relocated four times, each move symbolizing a new chapter of growth and expansion. Today, it resides in a newly built state-of-the-art facility designed to reflect their vision for the future of dentistry. By embracing cutting-edge technology and fostering collaboration, the Fielding family creates a seamless, patient centered approach to dental care that integrates great dentistry into their patient’s lives.

The how: Planning & preparation

After outgrowing their previous 8-operatory space, the partners knew they needed a solution to meet their growing needs. They explored opening a second location north of the city or expanding into adjacent units, but neither option worked. Then, in 2023, a “For Sale” sign appeared in the window of a 14,000 sq/ft uninhabited two-story bank building right across the street from their current location. It felt like fate. They excitedly purchased the building and began reimagining the overall layout as a healthcare hub for Burlington with multiple healthcare tenants in the other units. The new 7000 sq/ft, 14-operatory practice is positioned on the second floor with ample parking and elevator access. Months of planning included walking the blank space and testing cardboard layouts to perfect the patient experience as well as business and clinical workflows. In April 2024, they excitedly opened their new doors, after shutting down for just one well-coordinated transition day.

The results: Technical design features

The modern open-concept design redefines the traditional dental office. Patients are welcomed into a loft-like reception lounge with 360-degree windows showcasing serene, tree-lined views. Instead of the standard reception desk, four boutique seated checkout stations offer a more personalized patient experience. Open entry operatories foster collaboration and communication among staff, while a unique trolley system streamlines workflows for seamless patient care. Key features include a dedicated “Smile Suite” with a beautiful ornate reclining chair for treatment planning discussions and a child-friendly educational activity room to stimulate younger patients. The design also prioritizes the team’s well-being, with a beautiful staff lounge featuring a fully equipped kitchen and a large, seated meeting area for onsite training and continuing education. In the back, five private business offices and three associate admin stations ensure efficient operations, while a spacious storage area keeps everything organized.

The impact: Empowered practice outcomes

The practice has always been more than just a dental office. It’s part of the Burlington community. Their passion for great dentistry, an amazing team, and exceptional patient experience is clear. From its initiatives like serving breakfast to local high school students every Tuesday morning to the care they provide within their walls, their focus is always on making a difference. With a state-of-the-art lab featuring in-house milling machines for same day dentistry, a spacious admin area, and an inviting staff lounge designed to inspire and empower the team, they’ve built a space that supports excellence at every level. As they settle into their stunning new dental home, the team is energized by what’s ahead. This move-expansion wasn’t just about more room, it was about creating something truly special – a place where cutting edge dentistry meets human connection and where their vision of care and community comes to life.
